India registered 19,65,490 electric vehicles in FY2025, up 17% from 16,41,288 the year before. The numbers come from Vahan, the national vehicle registration database.
Most of these were not cars. They were scooters, motorcycles and three wheelers. And most were bought in a handful of states.

These seven states registered 12,62,843 EVs between them, 64% of the national total. Uttar Pradesh alone accounted for one in five.
Uttar Pradesh leads on electric three wheelers, mostly low cost rickshaws that carry passengers across its towns. Maharashtra leads on electric two wheelers and cars.
The fastest growth came from Madhya Pradesh (up 39%) and Tamil Nadu (up 36%). Karnataka, an early leader, grew only 2%.
What kind of EVs India buys
By FY2026 annual EV sales crossed 25 lakh. The mix shows where the transition is really happening.

Electric cars, buses and goods vehicles make up the remaining share. JMK reports electric car sales grew 86% in FY2026.

Two wheelers and passenger three wheelers made up close to 87% of EV sales. Electric cars are growing fast, but from a small base.
Penetration tells a different story
Total sales favour big states. Share of new vehicles that are electric favours smaller ones. JMK Research reports the highest EV penetration in FY2026 in Tripura at 17.8%, Assam at 15.6% and Delhi at 12.6%.
The cumulative count of EVs registered in India reached about 86.8 lakh by the end of FY2026.
